Ocean Art Walk 2014 in Stanley
The Ocean and You
12/04-04/05/2014; 12-19/04/2014; 13/04-04/05/2014
Did you know that there are more coral species in the waters around Hong Kong than in the entire Caribbean?
Hong Kong is a city celebrated not just for its dazzling cityscape, but also for the natural beauty of its shoreline, beaches and bays. Ocean Art Walk 2014 in Stanley aims to raise awareness of the connection between our everyday behaviour and the health of our ocean, and to encourage everyone to cherish our waters.
Inspired by a desire to do what they can to help improve the environment, a group of 12 local and international visual artists, photographers and choreographers, and 50 young local people, have come together to create sculptures, installations, a photography exhibition and a series dance performances that will take place at Stanley Plaza and along Stanley Promenade. The works illustrate issues relevant to Hong Kong such as the need to protect our marine life, to encourage sustainable fishing and to manage plastic consumption and waste.
Visual Arts
The artworks are created primarily from waste and recycled materials, with artists collectively using over 4,200 plastic bottles, 500 discarded CDs and 350 glass bottles collected from Stanley Plaza’s tenants as well as from bars and restaurants in the area, plus various other waste items collected from beaches. The photography exhibition illustrates the beauty as well as the plight of our ocean.
Dance Performances
Lindsey McAlister, Anca Chung and Desiree Ho collaborate with 25 young talented dancers to create a series of performances inspired by our ocean. Acid Ocean depicts the catastrophic effects of climate change, including the bleaching of our vibrant corals resulting in a wasteland of devastated marine life. In Earth’s Endangered, the young dancers embody the tenacity yet vulnerability of our ocean’s majestic creatures, while Bridge Back to Paradise shows the impact of industrialisation and urbanisation on once-abundant submarine worlds.
